1. Plan Before You Shop

The most important step happens before you leave the house. Plan your meals for the week, check what you already have in your fridge, and make a list. Including items you already have in your meal plan avoids food waste and saves money.

2. Bring Your Bags and Containers

Use one big bag or basket — a beach bag works great. Bring reusable produce bags for fruits and vegetables, and jars or containers for bulk items. You can reuse plastic and paper bags too, or make cloth bags from old pillowcases or sheets.

3. Shop the Bulk Section

Bulk bins are your best friend for zero waste grocery shopping. Bring your own containers for grains, nuts, dried fruit, spices, pasta, and even liquids like oils and vinegars. Most stores will let you tare (weigh) your containers before filling them.

4. Choose Package-Free Produce

Buy loose fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packaged. Skip the plastic produce bags — your cloth bags or even just placing items loose in your basket works fine. Look for stores or markets with produce without stickers when possible.

5. Organize Your Fridge Strategically

When you get home, arrange your fridge so items that will go bad sooner are towards the front. Cook those first. This simple habit maximizes freshness and minimizes food waste.

6. Store Food Properly

Use glass jars and containers for storage. Keep herbs in a jar of water like flowers. Store leafy greens wrapped in a damp cloth. Freeze anything you won't use in time — bread, fruit, cooked meals, even herbs in olive oil in ice cube trays.
